Arqus: Biologists from Vilnius University visit UWr

From the 6th to the 8th of December, the academics of Vilnius University, starting cooperation with our university within the Arqus alliance, are visiting the University of Wrocław. The University of Vilnius is represented by members of the Life Sciences Centre: prof. Eglė Lastauskienė, Chairwoman of the Vilnius University Senate and Director of the Institute of Biosciences, dr. Daiva Baltriukienė, Director of the PhD School and dr. Ingrida Prigodina Lukošienė, Deputy Director for Studies, as well as Chancellor Raimundas Balčiūnaitis.

The purpose of the visit is to explore opportunities for cooperation in the life sciences within Arqus, both in research and teaching.

On 6 December, the delegation met with UWr Rector Prof. Robert Olkiewicz, Vice-Rector for Projects and International Relations Prof. Patrycja Matusz, Prof. Zuzanna Drulis-Kawa from the Faculty of Biological Sciences, and Dr Dagmara Jakimowicz from the Faculty of Biotechnology. On the next day of their visit to Wrocław, the Vilnius scientists visited the Faculty of Biological Sciences, where they were acquainted with the topics of research conducted by UWr biologists, presented the structure of the Centre for Life Sciences of the University of Vilnius and the scope of research carried out there, and discussed the study programmes and doctoral schools run at both universities. Later in the day, the guests toured the Botanical Garden and the Museum of Natural History.  On 8 December, the Vilnius biologists will visit the Faculty of Biotechnology, where they will have a presentation of the faculty’s various departments and research centres, as well as laboratories.

According to Prof. Eglė Lastauskienė, there is a huge potential for cooperation, especially as the research interests of scientists of both universities largely overlap. Prof Lastauskienė, from an already 3-year experience of Vilnous in Arqus, advised UWr to be as active as possible in the alliance, not to be afraid of establishing new contacts and thus take advantage of all the opportunities the initiative offers. Dr Ingrida Prigodina Lukošienė talked about the implementation of Arqus projects related to the organisation of summer and winter schools for master’s students, in which Vilnius University participated. Similar projects will also be organised in the coming years. Dr Daiva Baltriukienė spoke about the opportunities Arqus provides for doctoral students, primarily in terms of mobility support.
