Jubilee of Prof. Zbigniew Kurcz and conference

On 24-25 November, an international conference will be held on the theme ‘Multidimensional Dynamics of Bilateral Relations in Europe. Poland and Germany – 30 years after the signing of the Treaty of Good Neighbourship’ and the Jubilee of Professor Zbigniew Kurcz.

In 2021, Poland and the Federal Republic of Germany will celebrate the 30th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Good Neighbourhood and Friendly Cooperation. Alongside the Border Treaty signed a year earlier, the Neighbourhood Treaty formed the basis for a new beginning in Polish-German relations in a democratic Europe. Over the past 30 years, bilateral relations have changed considerably and have been viewed from the perspective of reconciliation, a community of values and interests, and Germany’s role as Poland’s advocate on the road to the EU. These concepts referred to a period characterised by a strong asymmetry in the level of development of the two states (economic and political) and their institutional embeddedness, and therefore can hardly be considered relevant to the current political situation.

The aim of the conference is to discuss the political and social dynamics of bilateral relations in Europe, in particular those between Germany and Poland, at supranational, national and subnational levels in various policy areas. Furthermore, we want to focus on factors supporting and hindering neighbourly cooperation between Poland and Germany.

During the conference participants will celebrate the 70th birthday of Prof. Zbigniew Kurcz, who was for many years the director of the Institute of Sociology at the University of Wrocław and the founder of the Department of Borderland Sociology.
