The University of Wrocław received the Polish Intelligent Development Award 2020 in the University of the Future category for the implementation of the Leopoldina online project – a platform for integrating and sharing UWr’s electronic resources for science, education, and knowledge popularisation.

This prize is awarded to innovators, investors, organisations, and individuals for activities that particularly influence intelligent and sustainable development of life. The prestigious award is recognized both in the scientific and the business environment. The award symbolically highlights the authors’ contribution to technological and social innovations that raise the standard of living.

It is worth noting that awards are also given to projects in the implementation phase. It is an expression of the recognition of the idea itself, the commitment, and the promotion.

The Polish Intelligent Development Award is organised by the Intelligent Development Centre. The decision on granting the award is made by: representatives of the Intelligent Development Centre, representatives of the editorial office of the Things about Innovations section, and representatives of the Silesian Centre for Business Ethics and Sustainable Development, operating at the Silesian University of Technology.

Leopoldina online is a project implemented under the Digital Poland Operational Program for 2014–2020. The aim of the project is to digitise and disseminate valuable scientific resources of the University of Wrocław online, and to launch digital services that will increase the intensity and efficiency of the use of scientific achievements of UWr. As part of the project, a portal will be created that will provide access to academic and research works, and other scientific collections of the University of Wrocław. Digitalisation, substantive editing, and online availability of 23,805 objects is estimated.

Project tasks: construction of IT and technical facilities for storing, processing, and sharing digital data; digitisation of the resources of the University of Wrocław along with the substantive editing of objects intended for digitisation/sharing, including metadata and contextual descriptions, as well as the supply of equipment; security and software audit; creation of a digital Internet platform for the integration of search tools for the available electronic resources of UWr; development of database facilities along with the creation of additional functionalities that meet the criteria for interoperability with other digital platforms; adaptation of premises; implementation of information and promotion activities tailored to the identified target groups.

The bodies involved in the project are the Institute of Geography and Regional Development, the Department of Physical Geography, the Laboratory of History of Cartography of the Department of Geoinformatics and Cartography, the Museum of the University of Wrocław, the Department of Art History, the Institute of Archaeology, the Wrocław University Archive, the Faculty of Historical Sciences Library, the Botanical Garden, the Museum of Natural History, the Wrocław University Library, the Institute of Geography and Regional Development, the Department of Climatology and Atmosphere Protection, the Geological Museum, the Mineralogical Museum, the Astronomical Institute.
