Prof. dr hab. Janusz Wysoczański

The President of the Republic of Poland, Andrzej Duda, by his decision on 16 February 2022, awarded dr hab. Janusz Wysoczański the academic title of professor of sciences and natural sciences in the discipline of mathematics.

Prof. Janusz Wysoczański graduated in 1984 from the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry of the University of Wrocław, specialising in mathematics (theoretical specialisation). Defended his master’s thesis on “Characterisation of discrete groups with Banach mean and Littlewood functions on the free group”. In 1990 he defended his doctoral dissertation on “Free products of representations” at the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry of the University of Wrocław. He received the title of doctor of Mathematical Sciences in mathematics in 2009 on the basis of his habilitation dissertation “Constructions of non-transformational probabilistic models” at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of the University of Wrocław.

In the spring of 1993, he went for a month-long research stay at the University of Odense (Denmark), where he was invited by prof. Uffe Haagerup, one of the most eminent mathematicians of the second half of the 20th century. The next stage was a one-month visit to the University of Milan (Italy). From 1993 to 1995, he spent one and a half years on a postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Saskatchewan in Canada. In the following years, he cooperated with mathematicians from Germany (Heidelberg, Greifswald, Saarbrucken), Switzerland (Neuchatel), Japan (Tokyo, Kyoto, Sendai, Nagoya), France (Paris 6, Besancon), Austria (Graz), Morocco (Settat), Korea (Seoul, Cheongju), United Kingdom (Nottingham and Swansea), Italy (Bari).

Professor Janusz Wysoczański presented the results of his research at over 80 international conferences. He also co-organised over a dozen international conferences in Poland. He participated in the research work of several national and international projects (Polish-French, Polish-Japanese, Polish-German, Polish-Austrian) and EU scientific networks involving centers from several European countries.

The research interests of professor Janusz Wysoczański include the study of properties of discrete groups, in particular free groups, quantum groups, operator algebras, problems of operator theory, and non-convex probability. He is the author of a new concept of bm-independence of operator algebras.
