Quacquarelli Symonds (QS), a global leader in providing analytics services to the international higher education sector, yesterday released the results of its latest QS World University Rankings 2023, one of the top four global university rankings. The University of Wrocław was ranked among the 801-1000 best universities in the world, maintaining its last year’s position.

It was not easy, as every year more and more universities are evaluated in the ranking. In this edition QS took under the microscope as many as 2,462 institutions of higher education, of which 1,422 found their place in the final ranking. It is 124 more universities than last year. The ranking includes 22 Polish universities, 3 more than in the previous edition. There are only 4 universities ahead of us: University of Warsaw (ranked 284th), Jagiellonian University in Kraków (293rd), Poznań University of Life Sciences and Warsaw University of Technology (ranked 521-530). In the group of 801-1000 best universities, apart from the University of Wrocław, there were also: AGH University of Science and Technology, Cracow University of Technology, Adam Mickiewicz University Poznań, Lodz University of Technology, Wrocław University of Science and Technology, Gdańsk University of Technology, Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń, University of Lodz , University of Gdańsk and Poznań University of Technology.

As for the world’s top, MIT is in first place, followed by the University of Cambridge and Stanford University in third place.

In the QS World University Rankings the most important indicator, with a weight of as much as 40%, is the recognition of the university among the academic staff (Academic Reputation). Other important indicators, with a weight of 20%, are the Faculty Student Ratio and the normalized number of citations of scientific publications per employee. The ranking also includes the university’s reputation among employers (10%), as well as the degree of internationalisation of the academic staff (International Faculty Ratio – 5%) and the percentage of international students ( 5%).

This year the University of Wroclaw has made the greatest progress in the internationalisation of academic staff. In this category we are currently ranked 601st in the world.

We have also moved up in the Faculty Students Ratio category (574th place in the world) and Employer Reputation (501st place). This proves that we are constantly working to improve the quality of education provided to our students, and that they themselves are increasingly better assessed by employers from Poland and abroad.

Our strongest indicator is the recognition of the University of Wroclaw among academic staff (ranked 501.). Universities that cooperate with the University of Wrocław rate highly the level of scientific research conducted by our employees.

Academic Reputation is a key indicator not only in the QS ranking but also in other important global rankings, such as the Times Higher Education and US News. How can the University of Wrocław improve this indicator? In the case of QS, there is a simple way.

The QS ranking sends reputation questionnaires to scientists listed in databases such as Elsevier, but also to those whose data they obtained directly from universities that participate in the ranking. The greater the number of contacts to the researchers with whom you directly collaborate that are passed on to the ranking institution, the greater the chance of obtaining better results in Academic Reputation and in the overall ranking. If the questionnaire reaches scientists who know your work and value it, they will certainly indicate the University of Wrocław as a university conducting good quality scientific research.

The collection of data for reputation surveys and their transfer to QS is handled by the UWr Communication Department, which every year, in due time, asks particular university units to make this database of contacts available. Therefore, we appeal for providing the most exhaustive list of scientists cooperating with our university, hoping to achieve a higher position in the next edition of the ranking.

Details of the ranking can be found on the top universities website.
