POLISH MILLENNIUM GARDEN

“Polish Millennium Garden” project, co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund under the Operational Programme for the Lower Silesian Voivodeship 2014-2020.

The project involves expanding the Arboretum in Wojsławice – a branch of the Botanical Garden of Wrocław University – into a Polish Millennium Garden. The Polish Millennium Garden was inspired by the anniversary of the 1000th anniversary of the Battle of Niemcza, which falls in 2017, and the dynamic development of Polish ornamental and fruit plants breeding.

In the garden created by the project will grow:

– Polish varieties of ornamental and fruit plants obtained by Polish breeders

– ex situ conservation collections of selected threatened, endangered and protected plants

The new Garden will be established on former arable land owned by the Arboretum, within the administrative borders of Niemcza. The main objective of the project is to increase the existing biodiversity by adding native plant species and cultivars of Polish breeding and thus increasing the capacity of the Arboretum in Wojsławice in providing active ex-situ protection as well as expanding its educational and didactic area.

The “Polish Millennium Garden” is a comprehensive project combining protection of habitats with tourism through planned introduction of elements of ecological education and creation of promotional and information materials containing information about the Arboretum facility and the project itself. An additional objective is the chance of economic development of the Niemcza commune thanks to utilisation of its tourist potential, i.e., improvement of competitiveness of the Arboretum in Wojsławice, one of the most important tourist attractions in the region.

The project “Polish Millennium Garden”: RPDS.04.04.01-02-0006/16 is implemented under Priority Axis No. 4 “Environment and resources”, Measure No. 4.4 “Protection and sharing of natural resources”, Sub-measure No. 4.4.1 “Protection and sharing of natural resources – horizontal competitions” of the Regional Operational Programme for the Lower Silesian Voivodship 2014-2020.
