2021 has been declared The International Year of Caves and Karst. That is why scientists from the University of Wrocław, who have been studying the secrets of karst areas for years now, want to show everyone the beauty of the underground world.

The University of Wrocław is one of the most important centers in Central Europe dealing with caves research. Caves in the Sudetes and in the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland were explored by scientists from Koeniglische Universitaet zu Breslau in the 19th c. and at the beginning of the 20th c. In 1966, the spectacular discovery of the Niedźwiedzia Cave in Kletno started a new stage of cave research in Lower Silesia. From the very beginning, the research was conducted under the aegis of the University of Wrocław, in cooperation with other universities in Wrocław and other centers in the country and abroad. Next year is the 55th anniversary of the Bear Cave discovery.

Professor Krzysztof Stefaniak from the Department of Paleozoology of the University of Wrocław, together with a group of colleagues from the Faculty of Biological Sciences and the Faculty of Earth Sciences and Environmental Management, as well as scientists from Poland and from all over the world, want to invite all interested parties to the caves: Niedźwiedzia Cave, Radochowska Cave and the area of the Kraków-Częstochowa Upland and the Wieluń Upland. Researchers from Ukraine, the Czech Republic, Germany and Austria will also popularize their knowledge.

We invite you to follow the information that will be appearing on the Year of Caves website. We will be informing about the current events that await all lovers of the underground world here – during the pandemic in an online form, and in a stationary form when the situation returns to normal. These will be lectures, films, articles, cave tours, science camps and educational walks. Scientists are also preparing attractions for schools.
