On 2 September 2020, the new THE WUR 2021 (Times Higher Education – World University Rankings 2021) ranking was published. University of Wrocław, together with eighteen other Polish universities, is among the best 1527 higher education institutions in the world. It was placed number 4 in Poland and 1001+ in the world. It is a positive change compared with the previous year, as UWr was not on the list of this ranking.

About THE 2021 ranking

THE is one of the four most popular university rankings in the world (Big 4 Group: ARWU, QS, US News Global, and THE). In each ranking, universities are evaluated according to different criteria, thus their positions are different. In QS, for instance, UWr was placed in the range of 801-1000. In the THE WUR 2021, university performance was measured in five categories: Teaching, Research, Citations, Industry Income, and International Outlook. More detailed criteria and their weights are presented below:

Teaching Pillar (30%)
  • Doctorate to bachelor awarded: 2.25%
  • Doctorate awarded to academic staff: 6%
  • Teaching reputation: 15%
  • Institutional income to academic staff: 2.25%
  • Students to academic staff: 4.5%
Research Pillar (30%)
  • Publication per staff: 6%
  • Research income to academic staff: 6%
  • Research reputation: 18%
Citations pillar (30%)
  • Citations impact: 30%
Industry income pillar (2.5%)
  • Industry income to academic staff: 2.5%
International outlook pillar (7.5%)
  • Percentage of international staff: 2.5%
  • International co-authorship: 2.5%
  • Percentage of international students: 2.5%

Presence on the list of such a prestigious ranking is certainly a step forward. We are glad that we are recognised worldwide and we hope for increasingly higher positions in the subsequent years.
